Monthly Report December 2022

Monthly Report December 2022

Dear friends

December marked an exciting monthly group counselling meet and personal engagements with students on their well being, which has emerged as the most important focus area at this stage of their college journey. It also highlights the crucial role of counselling and guidance, and the importance to think of scholarships beyond funding needs.

Students have been witnessing intense pressure of catch up classes and tests. Many basic issues like classroom instruction in English and consuming all study material in digital rather than physical books led to performance and emotional stress.

The focus this month and for the next few months will remain to ensure that our scholars maintain high levels of self confidence and adopt better techniques to adjust into college rigor. Our counselling focus remains to proactively look out and address signs of withdrawal or worry.

Highlights

01. Monthly Group Session

The December group session revolved around communication, relationship building, and networking. Since, the Scholars are struggling with communication and feeling inadequate due to a lack of fluency in English, hindering their ability to seek help and network. Scholars rated the sessions 5/5 in satisfaction.

The scholars came away with valuable insights, including:

  • The importance of building a unique personal brand for effective communication
  • A deeper understanding of the fundamental principles of networking
  • The value of identifying and leveraging common interests in building connections with others.

02. Focus Session

Gaurang Shah, EVP and Regional Head for Eastern Europe and Middle East Africa at Mastercard and IIT-BHU alumini, was invited to speak on communication skills and how to be oneself. He emphasized that ‘fear of rejection’ is the true communication barrier, not fluency in English.

Gaurang shared personal anecdotes from his life where how being oneself and creating a unique proposition of himself helped him achieve heights in life. He encouraged scholars to consider the potential outcomes of taking risks and to focus on their unique strengths. The session was well-received, with scholars noting a shift in their perception of language as a “barrier to communication.”

‘Don’t stress, do your best and forget the rest.’

We understand that we are still new to this, but we are committed to evolving and learning alongside the scholars”

Feb Month was the focus month for exams. We shared critical tips on exams that helped them to get the best of themselves.

Wrap up exercise to manage their onset sleep, Pomodoro technique to manage distraction and increase focus and strategies to help in channelizing their mind chatter so that they can conserve their energy.

It was great to see scholars getting settled in dealing with their exam pressures and managing their academic calendars. It was motivating to learn that scholars going beyond academics and scaling heights in sport field too!

  • Academic – Medium (Scholars are getting comfortable with academics however they need to push their scores from average to high and have some work on that front)
  • Social – High (Sports activities are helping them connect with seniors)
  • Emotional – Medium (Scholars still needs to work on Emotional Resilience)

Coordinator’s Note

Devesh Kumar

“It has been a very hectic month, with all the scholars being occupied with their exams. We understand the stress that they were going through and as a result, we decided to minimize our engagement while focusing on evolving as their support system. We planned to connect with them through check-in calls after their exams and in the meantime, we communicated with them via chat, providing motivating pointers to boost their morale. Our primary focus is on the holistic development of scholars, and as a result, we have been providing counselling and emphasizing the importance of experience and learning.

We understand that we are still new to this, but we are committed to evolving and learning alongside the scholars”
